Crooked or uneven teeth can be straightened by braces to improve their appearance and function.

An important part of the dental care we give to children is to monitor their dental development and assess whether any orthodontic treatment is required to encourage the teeth to grow into the correct position.

Orthodontics is not only for children. Adults can also benefit from this type of treatment. In most cases where orthodontic treatment is indicated we will seek the advice and help of a Specialist Orthodontist.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry that deals with improving the alignment of teeth, usually by fitting braces which gently push the teeth into the correct position. In addition to improving your smile, correctly aligned teeth can resolve gum disease, headaches and jaw pain. Your mouth will be healthier and your teeth will be easier to clean.

If braces are required, they are best fitted before adulthood, while the teeth and jaws are still developing. However, even for adults, it's never too late. Orthodontics is an increasingly popular treatment for all age groups.

What treatment will I receive?

In the first instance some records will be taken of your teeth. This will include, photographs and x-rays of your teeth and jaws and impressions will be taken to make models of your teeth.

The orthodontist uses this information to decide the best way to align your teeth and the results that can be expected.

The two most common types of dental braces are: fixed braces and removable braces.

Fixed braces are attached to the teeth by small brackets connected by wires. The brackets are usually made of stainless steel. Tooth coloured ceramic brackets are now available and, as they are less noticeable, they are an increasingly popular choice. Fixed braces remain attached to your teeth for the duration of treatment and can only be removed by a dentist.

Removable braces are made of plastic and are held in place with wires that grip the teeth. This type of brace can be removed for cleaning.

How long will it take?

The length of treatment can vary, but most braces take around 18 months to move the teeth into position. Another type of brace - called a retainer - is then fitted to hold the teeth in place for a further few months.
