A filling replaces part of a tooth that has been lost because of decay or through accidental damage.
Traditionally all fillings used to be made from dental amalgam which is silver grey in colour. Nowadays we can offer much more attractive solutions and we use tooth coloured materials wherever possible.
You may hear us talk about 'composite', 'glass ionomer' and 'compomer' - these are all different types of white filling.
What are the benefits of white fillings?
- Unlike silver fillings, white fillings stick to teeth and can form edges, so they can be used to repair front teeth and cover marks or discoloration.
- White fillings are less noticeable than silver fillings. They can be colour matched to your teeth to achieve a lifelike result.
- Often a tooth needs less preparation for a white filling than for a silver filling.
- Because they stick to teeth, white fillings can often help to strengthen a tooth that has cracked.
